Ottawa, April 26, 2018 — The Canadian Chamber of Commerce welcomes the announcement of a comprehensive intellectual property strategy from the government of Canada today.  There is a strong link between the economic benefits of knowledge capital and the protection of intellectual property.  IP protections provide the legal certainty needed for innovators and creators to make high-risk, high-capital investment into the newest creative content, cutting-edge technologies, and next generation medicines.
 
“This new IP strategy acknowledges the concerns expressed by the business community. By removing barriers to innovation, creating a business portal and strengthening the rules around use of IP, the government is supporting businesses of all sizes that depend on their intellectual property to compete on the global stage,” said the Hon. Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. 
 
The Canadian Chamber also welcomes the announcement that the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) will launch a suite of programs to help improve IP literacy and sophistication among Canadian businesses. “Growing and sustaining an innovative economy requires greater IP literacy and that innovators know their intellectual property will be protected. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is proud to be partnering with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the Canadian Bar Association in helping to deliver that awareness for business,” said Mr. Beatty.
 
The Chamber looks forward to continued dialogue with government to find solutions to the challenges for creators and IP owners in the areas of enforcement, such as an IP Center that coordinates the enforcement efforts across multiple agencies and the treatment of IP in trade agreements.
