Paul Stinson – whose family’s roots to the area date back to United Empire Loyalist days – took up a hammer at the age of 14, working part-time following in his father’s footsteps who started George Stinson construction in the 50s.  He did spend about 6 months at Union Carbide but that is the only other job he’s ever known and has built hundreds of homes in the past 40 years since he started Paul Stinson Builders Ltd. in 1979.  His son, Brad, came on board in the 1990s and the business is now known simply as Stinson Builders Ltd.  While he attributes staying busy through the down times with establishing a good reputation and keeping their nose to the grindstone, there is no doubt his volunteer work serving as chair for 2 Lottery Home and 2 student structure builds, Vice-President of the Canadian Home Builders Association and 5 years on the Board for the Ontario New Home Warranty program have also kept him occupied.  He continues to serve on the Board of Directors for the Children’s Safety Village in Belleville (if you haven’t seen it, you should) and remains the go-to guy when any of the miniature buildings require repair.  He has also been a strong supporter of the Belleville and Kingston General Hospitals.

He has also been a member of the QHBA for more than 40 years and was the recipient of the 2017 QHBA Lifetime Member Achievement Award - This award is presented to a QHBA member who, during their career, has made a significant, long lasting and outstanding contribution to the residential construction industry and the QHBA.  He fulfilled the President’s role for two terms in 1982-1983 and has been active in the board since that time. You will find Paul and his wife, Barb at almost every QHBA event and I can attest to their presence at every Safety Village community event – handing out candies or hot chocolate regardless of the weather.

As a Founder, he has continued and grown a business that now spans into the third generation – much as last year’s recipient, Ross McDougall had done.  With his volunteer work at the community, provincial and national level he has helped put Belleville on the map – and for this, we thank you for being you.
