A Bold Step for Canada’s Competitiveness: Canadian Chamber Applauds Trans Mountain and Line 3 Approvals

"The government has taken a difficult decision, but one that is in the best interests of Canada. These pipelines will diversify our international energy markets, create much-needed jobs for Canadian families and benefit every region of the country,” said the Hon. Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. “Our national network of 450 Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade has repeatedly demonstrated its support for getting Canadian oil to international markets. Trans Mountain and Line 3 will responsibly support the competitiveness of Canada's economy.”

The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion will allow Alberta oil producers to access international markets through the Port of Vancouver, diminishing Canada’s reliance on its current client, the United States.

“There’s an international demand for Canadian oil, and this pipeline is an important part of getting our product to market. This will greatly benefit the energy sector, the Albertan economy and, ultimately the Canadian economy. The energy sector serves as an important market for manufacturers in Ontario, engineering firms in Quebec and clean tech developers in B.C.” said Mr. Beatty.

Earlier this year, the NEB concluded the Trans Mountain Expansion Project is in the Canadian public interest and recommended approval of the proposed expansion, with conditions. The Canadian Chamber and its members will work closely with Kinder Morgan to meet and exceed each of the conditions set out, ensuring the highest standards in the development of this project.

“We have confidence that Kinder Morgan and Enbridge can work with government, communities and First Nations to ensure the highest standards of safety and environmental protection,” concluded Mr. Beatty.
